Shopee was founded in 2015, and went from an upstart to the dominant player within 4 years, dethroning Lazada, Tokopedia, and other smaller national players. Today, it is the dominant player in the region with ~53% market share.

TikTok Shop entered Southeast Asia in 2021 and rapidly expanded across the region in 2022, with market share quadrupling in 2023 and 2024 from 1% → 4% → 16%. Today, with the acquisition of Tokopedia, it has at least 30% market share in Southeast Asia.

TikTok Shop is a serious competitive threat to Shopee. That much should be clear by now. As it stands, e-commerce in Southeast Asia is headed towards a duopoly.

Shopee and TikTok Shop collectively control over 90% of Indonesia's e-commerce market, with similar dominance patterns emerging across Vietnam (97% combined) and the Philippines (84% combined), signalling the end of the multi-player competitive era in Southeast Asia.

In this piece, we will discuss the competitive landscape today, their differing approaches, fulfilment, GenAI and the future outlook for these 2 giants.
